Tar Heels End Season With 7-2 Loss At Old Dominion
June 21, 1999 | Field Hockey
The North Carolina field hockey team suffered a premature end to its season Sunday with a 7-2 loss to Old Dominion in a second round NCAA game. With the defeat, Carolina finished the season 13-8 and failed to reach the National Championships for the first time since 1988.
North Carolina's goals were scored by sophomore Jana Toepel in the first half and freshman Abby Martin in the second. Martin, who had the assist on Toepel's goal, scored in a penalty stroke.
Old Dominion's Mimi Smith scored less than three minutes into the game and the Monarchs led throughout, beating UNC for the third time in the 1998 season.
The game marked the final outing in Carolina blue for three seniors: Moira McFadden, Nancy Pelligreen and Stacey Schweighart. The Tar Heels will return the rest of the roster*including three freshmen who redshirted the 1998 season*in 1999.
