WINNIPEG, Canada -- The U.S. women's field hockey national team opened play in the Pan American Games Sunday with a 2-0 win over Trinidad & Tobago. Kate Barber, who played for Carolina from 1994-97 and is now an undergraduate assistant coach for the Tar Heels, scored the second of the team's goals. The U.S. already led 1-0 after Kelli James scored on a penalty corner six minutes into the game. Five minutes later, James drew Trinidad & Tobago keeper Michelle Thornhill out of the goal on a breakaway, then fed a short pass to Barber, who deposited the ball in the empty goal and put the U.S. up 2-0.
Former Tar Heels Peggy Storrar and Cindy Werley and rising junior Jana Toepel also started the game for the U.S. Jana Withrown, the UNC goalkeeper from 1994-97, is Storrar's backup.
The U.S. team will take on Canada Tuesday and Argentina on Thursday. The winner of this seven-team tournament earns an automatic qualification to the 2000 Olympic Games.
