WINNIPEG, Manitoba - The U.S. women's field hockey team beat Mexico 3-0 in Sunday's Pan American Games competition to improve to 4-1. With a win or a tie in Monday's game against Chile, the U.S. will advance to the gold medal game on Aug. 4 for a rematch with Argentina, a 2-1 winner over the U.S. team on July 29.
UNC alum Cindy Werley scored first against Mexico, in the 27th minute. After stealing the ball on a breakaway, forward Michelle Vizzuso drew out Mexico keeper Mirna Garcia before passing to Werley, who scored the open-cage goal. Goalkeepers Peggy Storrar and Jana Withrow, both former Tar Heel players, combined for the team's fourth shutout of the competition.
Kate Barber, a Carolina classmate of Werley and Withrow, and Jana Toepel, a junior at UNC, also started for the U.S. Barber contributed a goal in Friday's 4-0 win over Cuba.
