WINNIPEG, Manitoba - The U.S. women's field hockey team earned a shot at the Pan American Games gold medal with a 2-0 win over Chile in the tournament's final pool play game Monday. The championship game against Argentina is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon. Argentina beat the U.S. 2-1 on July 29 in the teams' first meeting of the tournament.
The first U.S. goal on Monday was the result of teamwork by former Carolina teammates Cindy Werley and Kate Barber. At the 40-minute mark, the former passed to the latter for the score. "Cindy made a great clearing cut that took all the defense with her," Barber said. "They just collapsed on her and she made a great pass back to the middle. I was wide open." Nine minutes later, Kris Fillat scored to give the U.S. its 2-0 margin of victory.
Wednesday's game will mark the third time in four Pan Am Games tournaments that Argentina and the U.S. have met for the championship. Argentina won both previous meetings, by 3-2 scores in 1987 and '95. "They're well-schooled and have a lot of skillful players," U.S. coach Tracey Belbin said. "But we have a few things up our sleeve."
