CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina midfielder Abby Martin has been named ACC Player of the Week in field hockey following the first weekend of the season. A sophomore from Saratoga Springs, N.Y., Martin led the Tar Heels with three goals in the team's first two games.
In a 4-1 win over Michigan on Saturday, she scored the team's final goal of the game. In a 4-0 win against Duke on Sunday, Martin kicked off UNC's scoring with a first-half penalty stroke and also scored the fourth goal of the game, on a penalty corner.
Martin appeared in all 21 games last season as a true freshman and started seven. She scored nine goals and added two assists for a total of 20 points in 1998.
The Tar Heels are 2-0 overall, 1-0 in the ACC after the weekend's wins. This weekend they travel to Pennsylvania, where they'll play at Penn State on Sunday at noon.
