Tar Heels Earn Regional All-America Field Hockey Honors

Seven University of North Carolina field hockey players have earned spots on the AstroTurf/National Field Hockey Coaches Association South Region All-America teams, announced today. Seniors Kristen McCann and Jana Toepel, junior Abby Martin and sophomore Amy Tran were named to the first team while senior Erin Cox, junior Carrie Lingo and sophomore Meredith Keller earned spots on the second team.
McCann, a forward from Macungie, Pa., who was named the 2000 Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year, leads UNC in scoring with 24 goals and 50 points. Toepel, a back from Perkiomenville, Pa., who shares co-captain duties with McCann, has five goals and 11 assists this season.
Martin, a back from Saratoga Springs, N.Y., is second on the team in scoring with 37 points on 12 goals and 11 assists. Tran, a goalkeeper from Grantville, Pa., is giving up an average of 1.05 goals per game and has seven shutouts this season.
Cox, a back from Newark, Del., is the team's assist leader with 12 and also has two goals. Lingo, a midfielder from Rehoboth Beach, Del., has scored six goals this season, including two in Sunday's second round win over Massachusetts. Keller, a midfielder from Greenville, Del., has two goals and two assists this season.
Keller, Martin, McCann, Toepel and Tran have started all 22 games for the Tar Heels this season. Cox and Lingo have missed games with injuries, but have started all the games in which they have appeared.
First-team selections Martin, McCann, Toepel and Tran are eligible for All-America honors. Toepel has earned spots on the first team the last two seasons, and McCann was named to the third team as a junior.
The third-ranked Tar Heels (19-3) will meet second-ranked Maryland (19-3) Friday in an NCAA semifinal game in Norfolk, Va. No. 1 Old Dominion (23-1) and No. 4 Wake Forest (18-3) will play in the other game, and the NCAA championship game is scheduled for Sunday at 2 p.m.
