The third-ranked University of North Carolina field hockey team has been seeded second in the 2000 NCAA Tournament and will host 11th-ranked Kent State in a first round game on Saturday. "We're very excited to be in the tournament and have the opportunity to host," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "We'll work hard during the next couple of days to prepare for a very good Kent State team."
Kent State (19-3) is led by freshman forward Arlette van Cleeff, who has 23 goals and eight assists on the season, and freshman midfielder Els Brouwer, who has 21 goals and 22 assists. UNC and Kent State have met just once, in 1990. The Tar Heels won that game 3-0 on Sept. 29 in Chapel Hill.
UNC will face the Golden Flashes at 11 a.m. Saturday at Francis E. Henry Stadium. No. 8 Massachusetts (18-3) will meet No. 13 Boston University (16-7) at 2 p.m. First-round winners will play on Sunday at 2 p.m. and the winner of that game will advance to the NCAA Championships, to be held Nov. 17 and 19 at Old Dominion in Norfolk, Va.
Carolina is one of three Atlantic Coast Conference teams among the four seeds. Maryland received the No. 3 seed and will face New Hampshire in the first round. Other teams in College Park are Princeton and Penn State. Wake Forest received the No. 4 seed and will meet Harvard in the first round. Other teams at that site are Michigan and William & Mary. "I'm very proud of the ACC's representation in the top four," Shelton said.
Top-ranked Old Dominion received the tournament's No. 1 seed and will face Stanford in the first round. Connecticut and Virginia are the other teams in Norfolk.
The Tar Heels are 17-3 and ranked No. 3 in the most recent STX/National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll. Carolina, appearing in its 18th consecutive NCAA Tournament, has won four NCAA Championships, including three in a row from 1995-97.
Tickets to the weekend's games are $5 for adults, $3 for students, and can be purchased at the gate or by calling the UNC ticket office at 800-722-HEEL (4335) or 919-962-2296.
