Game Notes
*The University of North Carolina successfully defended its NCAA Women's College Cup title with a 2-1 victory over UCLA. The Women's College Cup championship is the 16th NCAA women's soccer championship for the Tar Heels since 1982 and the 17th national title which includes one AIAW crown.
*In both the semifinal and championship games of the 2000 Women's College Cup, all four UNC goals were scored after UNC trailed 1-0. North Carolina defeated Notre Dame and UCLA by identical 2-1 scores.
*North Carolina needed three come-from-behind victories to capture the 2000 Women's College Cup. The Tar Heels knocked off Virginia 2-1 on November 18 in a third round NCAA match and used the two 2-1 wins over Notre Dame and UCLA for the championship. In all this season, North Carolina had six comeback victories.
*North Carolina finishes the 2000 season with a 21-3 record. The Tar Heels have posted 12 consecutive 20-win seasons.
*The "own goal" that gave North Carolina a 2-1 lead in the championship was the second "own" goal credited to the Tar Heels in 2000.
*North Carolina changed its starting lineup from Friday's semifinal game for Sunday's championship. Freshman Catherine Reddick made her first collegiate start.
*North Carolina played 45 seconds of the first half with 10 players. Kim Patrick left the field in the 38th minute with a cut above her right eye.
*Lindsay Greco's goal for UCLA was her eighth of the season and second of the NCAA Tournament. She scored the Bruins' game-winning goal against Clemson in an NCAA quarterfinal match on November 25.
*Meredith Florance's goal for North Carolina was her 26th of the season and her fourth goal of the NCAA Tournament. She also scored in the victories over Virginia and Connecticut. Florance had two goals against Connecticut. This is the second straight year Florance has scored a goal in the Women's College Cup championship game. She scored the game-winner in the 1999 title game against Notre Dame.
*The two goals allowed by ICLA is the only time this season the Bruins have given up more than one goal in a contest. Notre Dame has not given up more than one goal in a game this season prior to Friday's 2-1 semifinal loss to the Tar Heels.
*In the last six Final Fours/College Cups, 18 game were played. 14 of the 18 games were decided by one goal. The other four games were decided by two goals.
*UCLA was bidding to become one of the few schools in NCAA history to win two NCAA championships on the same day. Also today, the Bruins are facing the University of California-San Diego in the NCAA Men's Water Polo Championship hosted by Pepperdine University in Malibu, California.
