The 2000 U.S. women's Under-21 field hockey team, which included five University of North Carolina players, has been selected the Team of the Year by the U.S. Field Hockey Association. The Under-21 team won a silver medal at the Junior Pan American Championships in Barbados last March and earned a spot in the 2001 Junior World Cup.
The team's second-place finish was the best Junior Pan Am showing by a U.S. squad since 1988. Led by coach Tracey Griesbaum, the U.S. team lost to Argentina in the gold medal game.
Tar Heels who played for the 2000 Under-21 team are Lizzy Duffy, Carrie Lingo, Abby Martin, Amy Tran and Abbey Woolley.
Katie Kauffman and Shawn Hindy were named women's and men's Athletes of the Year. The USFHA honorees are now eligible for the U.S. Olympic Committee's SportsMan, SportsWoman and Team of the Year awards. Announcement of the 2000 USOC honors is scheduled for Dec. 14.
