Five UNC alumni and one current Tar Heel player have been named to the U.S. Field Hockey team that will compete in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Milton Keynes, England, March 24-April 2. The U.S. must finish in the top five at the 10-team tournament to earn a spot in the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.
Jana Toepel, a rising senior on the UNC team, is the only player on the U.S. team who still has collegiate eligibility. She earned All-America and All-ACC honors playing for the Tar Heels last fall.
Former Carolina players on the U.S. team are Kate Barber, Nancy Pelligreen, Peggy Storrar, Cindy Werley and Jana Withrow. Werley was a member of the U.S. Olympic team in 1996.
Tar Heels make up a third of the roster of 18 players who will travel to the tournament in England. Should the U.S. qualify to compete in Sydney, a 16-member Olympic squad will be selected in June.
