The U.S. women's field hockey team remained in the hunt for an Olympic berth with a 2-1 win Wednesday against India at the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Milton Keynes, England. Playing at England's National Hockey Stadium, the U.S. team fought back from a 1-0 halftime deficit to earn the win and set up a meeting on Friday with Japan, the fourth-place team in Pool B. The American team is in third place in Pool A.
Former UNC standout Cindy Werley tied Wednesday's game at 1-1 with her third goal of the tournament. At the 48 minute mark, she settled the ball at the top of the circle then sent a shot between the pads of India goalkeeper Tingonleima Chaun. The U.S. took the lead when Tracey Fuchs scored on a penalty stroke with four minutes left in the game.
In addition to Werley, UNC was represented in the starting lineup by alum Peggy Storrar (the U.S. team's starting goalkeeper) and rising senior Jana Toepel. Former Tar Heels Kate Barber and Nancy Pelligreen were subs.
If the U.S. beats Japan, the team will play again on Saturday, facing the winner of Friday's Ireland/China match. The winner of Saturday's game will earn the fifth and final available 2000 Olympic berth. Tournament participants Germany, Spain, Great Britain and New Zealand already have clinched spots in the field.
