Summer Field Hockey League Begins In Chapel Hill

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-The United Airlines Field Hockey League, a competitive summer league that includes many of the nation's top female players, will kick off its third season on Friday evening at Francis E. Henry Stadium on the UNC campus. The first game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and the action will continue throughout the day on Saturday and until midday on Sunday. League play continues at Princeton, N.J., June 16-18 and culminates with the UAFHL championship June 30-July 1 in College Park, Md.
The locally-based Southern Charm squad, coached by Carolina's Karen Shelton, is the league's defending champion and features a number of current and former UNC players. Among those who will compete for the Charm this weekend are Cindy Werley, Carolina's all-time scoring leader, Leslie Lyness, a 1996 Olympian whose UNC jersey has been retired, and seven undergraduate Tar Heels. Other Charm players are Duke coach Liz Tchou and Wake Forest coach Jennifer Averill.
The Southern Charm is in action Friday at 5:30 p.m, Saturday at 11 a.m., 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 8 a.m. More information, including rosters of all six teams, is available on the U.S. Field Hockey website, www.usfieldhockey.com.
