UNC Debuts at No. 2 In First Field Hockey Poll

The University of North Carolina field hockey team is ranked No. 2 in the first STX/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I National Coaches Poll of the season, released today. Maryland, ranked No. 1, received all 25 first-place votes in the poll. The Tar Heels are 5-0 heading into this weekend's games against a pair of top-10 teams, No. 3 Old Dominion on Saturday and No. 7 Virginia on Sunday.
Already this season, UNC has defeated two top-five teams in No. 4 Michigan (4-2 on Sept. 3) and No. 5 Penn State (2-1 OT on Sept. 4). In addition to this weekend's opponents, other ranked teams remaining on UNC's schedule are No. 1 Maryland, No. 6 Wake Forest, No. 9 James Madison, No. 11 William & Mary and No. 13 Princeton.
Carolina's showdown with ODU on Saturday has been dubbed "Fan Appreciation Day" and will feature giveaways from local establishments such as the Ramshead Rathskellar and Michael Jordan's 23. The first 300 fans to arrive at Francis E. Henry Stadium will get free hotdogs and sodas and the first 150 Carolina students will receive t-shirts.
Both Saturday's and Sunday's games are set for 1 p.m. There is no charge for admission to Henry Stadium.
