CHAPEL HILL -- The University of North Carolina volleyball team defeated the Clemson Tigers 3-0(15-3, 17-15, 15-8). The Tar Heels move to 2-0 in the ACC and 12-2 for the season. Three Carolina players posted double-digit kills with a team hitting percentage of .377.
Casey Simpson tallied 15 kills with only 2 errors for a career-high .520 hitting percentage. Laura Greene posted a double-double with 14 kills and a match-high 12 digs. Eve Rackham registered 52 assists and 11 digs for the Tar Heels.
In game one, the teams seemed evenly matched exchanging side-outs and answering point for point. A kill from middle hitter Krista Buchholz took the Heels on a 12 point run that the Tigers would not recover from. Carolina did not allow another Clemson point and fittingly Buchholz hammered the final kill to win 15-3.
Game two saw Carolina continuing to rally points keeping the Tigers to 7-3. Clemson slowly crept up and with the score at 11-8 went on a 7-0 run to take the lead 11-14. A service ace from Lisa Fryer took UNC on a 4 point run to 15-14. Nicole Reis blasted the winning kill, 17-15.
In game three Carolina once again took an early lead but the Tigers would rally back to tie the score 8-8. Defensively, UNC outhit Clemson .380 to .295 and the Tigers were unable to rally back. A service ace from Rackham won the game at 15-8.
Jodi Steffes led Clemson with 17 kills and Kiki Dallao posted 16 kills. Jessi Betcher registered 39 assists for the Tigers.
With two ACC wins, Carolina heads on a five game road trip beginning in Raleigh N.C. where they face N.C. State Tuesday (Sept. 26) night at 7 p.m.
