
Carolina Volleyball Named 2000 Fall Preview Champions

CHAPEL HILL-- The University of North Carolina volleyball team defeated Hofstra 3-1(15-11, 15-13, 10-15, 15-13) to become the 2000 Carolina Fall Preview Tournament champions. Freshman Nicole Reis received Tournament MVP honors while sophomore middle hitter Holly Strauss was named to the All-Tournament team. The Tar Heels are 4-0 for the season.
Nicole Reis and Laura Greene led the Heels with 20 and 15 kills respectively. Reis also recorded 11 digs and four block assists. Outside hitter Malaika Underwood and Holly Strauss led UNC with 16 digs each as four other Tar Heels also scored double-figures in digs. Setter Jen Schirner delivered 58 assists, 14 digs and six kills.
Stefanie Rewitz led Hofstra with 19 kills and 19 digs. April Nick followed Rewitz with 13 kills and six digs. Hofstra was able to out-hit the Tar Heels .168 to .158.
From the onset it was clear that Hofstra was hungry for a win. In game one, UNC was off to a good start holding The Pride to 13-3. Hofstra rallied back with five unanswered points and closed the lead to 14-11. UNC persevered and won the game15-11.
In game two, the teams battled back and forth giving up few points and for the first time in the match, Hofstra took the lead and tied the game 7-7. The Tar Heels reestablished the lead and held Hofstra to 15-13.
Game three was also tight, as The Pride came from a 5-1 deficit. The Tar Heels maintained a steady lead until the Pride went on an 8-0 run from which UNC never rallied back from. This was Carolina's only loss of the tournament with 10-15.
The Tar Heels took a 9-6 lead in game four before Hofstra would tie it at 10. The teams played point for point until Carolina secured the final two points and the game at 15-13.
In the other evening match, Pittsburgh defeated Coastal Carolina 3-0 (15-6, 15-4, 15-11). Marcia Thiesen and Heather Haff led the Cougars with 14 kills each.
Carolina returns to action in the Tennessee Classic Sept. 8-9. They face Jacksonvillie State in the first round at 5:00 p.m. Friday on their first road trip of the season.
