Six current or former Carolina field hockey players have earned spots on the U.S. Women's National Team, named by the U.S. Field Hockey Association following tryouts Jan. 3-7 in Chula Vista, Calif. Kate Barber, Carrie Lingo, Abby Martin, Kristen McCann, Peggy Storrar and Amy Tran all have been selected as members of the nation's top team.
Three of the Carolina players-Barber, McCann and Storrar- are veterans of the national team, and three-Lingo, Martin and Tran-are new additions to the roster. Lingo, Martin, McCann and Tran were members of the 2000 Carolina squad that reached the NCAA Championship game and finished the season 20-4.
McCann, the 2000 ACC Player of the Year, wrapped her UNC career in the fall, but Lingo and Martin are rising seniors and Tran is a rising junior. Due to the extensive travel and training involved with being on the team, all three of the current Tar Heel players will take the spring semester away from UNC and the Carolina field hockey program.
"I'm incredibly proud of our young athletes," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "They've worked extremely hard to put themselves in a position to be selected for this team. We'll miss them this semester, but we'll have them back in the fall as more experienced and accomplished players."
Barber, whose last season with the Tar Heels was 1997, played on three national championship teams in Chapel Hill. Storrar's last season with Carolina was '93.
Storrar and Tran are the only goalkeepers on the roster. No other collegiate program is represented on the national team by more than two players.
The U.S. National Team will compete in the Americas Cup in Jamaica in March, with the opportunity to earn a spot in the 2002 World Cup field. The U.S. will have another shot at a World Cup berth at the World Cup Qualifying Tournament Sept. 18-30 in France.
