Five University of North Carolina field hockey players have been named to the 2001 U.S. Field Hockey Under-21 Team following tryouts last week in Chula Vista, Calif. Tar Heels earning spots on the 23-player roster were Stephanie Fuller, Meredith Keller, Abby Martin, Amy Tran and Abbey Woolley.
Martin, Tran and Woolley all were members of the Under-21 Team in 2000, when it placed second in the Junior Pan American Championships. That finish earned the U.S. a berth in the 2001 Junior World Cup, which is scheduled for May 14-26 in Buenos Aires.
Martin and Woolley are rising seniors for UNC, while Fuller, Keller and Tran will be juniors during the 2001 season. The Tar Heels finished the 2000 season 20-4 and reached the NCAA Championship game before falling to Old Dominion. Tran earned first-team All-America honors at the conclusion of the season and Martin was named to the third team.
No other collegiate program placed more than three players on the Under-21 team. Princeton is represented by three players, while Maryland and Michigan have two each. Players on the roster from other ACC schools are Maryland's Carissa Messimer and Dina Rizzo, and Wake Forest's Maria Whitehead. Duke's Kim Gogola and Virginia's Emily White were selected as alternates to the team.
