CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--UNC field hockey senior Carrie Lingo is in for a busy couple of days. On Tuesday morning at 6:30, she left Chapel Hill, bound for Springfield, Mass., where she joined the U.S. National Team for a game against South Africa Tuesday evening at Springfield College. Wednesday morning, she'll fly back to rejoin her Tar Heel teammates for a 1 p.m. matchup with top-ranked Old Dominion at Francis E. Henry Stadium.
Lingo, a midfielder, is a member of the U.S. team, but hadn't planned to play with the squad in its four-game series against South Africa because it fell in the middle of the collegiate schedule. The team lost a key player recently, however, when former Tar Heel Kate Barber suffered a broken hand. Lingo received word on Sunday that her services were needed.
She doesn't have classes on Tuesdays, so the international game fell on an ideal day. She's scheduled to arrive back in Chapel Hill around 10 a.m. on Wednesday.
UNC's game with ODU was originally set for Sept. 15, but was postponed following the events of Sept. 11. The Lady Monarchs are the defending NCAA Champions after defeating UNC 3-1 in the title game last November.
Following Wednesday's game against the nation's No. 1 team, the fifth-ranked Tar Heels (10-3, 2-1 ACC) turn their attention to No. 2. Carolina hosts second-ranked Maryland Saturday at 1 p.m. for an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup. On Sunday, UNC plays at No. 14 Duke.
