Ten Tar Heel field hockey players have been invited to participate in the U.S. Field Hockey Association's A Camp selection trials, which begin Dec. 27 at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif. A total of 84 top collegiate and high school athletes will compete for spots on the 2002 Under-23 and Under-19 teams during the camp, which ends on Dec. 31.
Carolina players competing in California are Amber Chambers, Kerry Falgowski, Carey Fetting-Smith, Stephanie Fuller, Kelsey Keeran, Meredith Keller, Abby Martin, Katy Potter, Katy Tran and Abbey Woolley. Chambers, Falgowski, Fetting-Smith, Keeran, Potter and Tran will be sophomores on the 2002 UNC team, while Fuller and Keller will be seniors. Martin and Woolley finished their eligibility with the 2001 season.
With 10 participants, the UNC program has more representatives at A Camp than any other school. Iowa is next with seven and Princeton follows with five. Maryland and Michigan each have three.
Athletes earn invitations to A Camp through performances in U.S. Field Hockey programs such as 2001 junior teams, B Camp and the United Airlines Field Hockey League as well as the National Hockey Festival.
Events on the 2002 competition calendar include the Pan America Hockey Federation Indoor Tournament for the Under-23 Team and the California and Montreal Cups for the Under-19 team.
Fetting-Smith, Fuller, Keeran, Keller, Martin and Woolley were members of the 2001 Under-21 Team, while Tran was on the Under-18 Team.
