Tran Helps U.S. National Team To Shutout

In her first appearance with the U.S. National Team, Tar Heel goalkeeper Amy Tran combined with Peggy Storrar, a UNC alum, for a 5-0 shutout of Mexico Thursday in the America's Cup opener for both teams. In Jamaica, the U.S. team jumped out front early and led 3-0 at the half. Kristen McCann, a senior on the 2000 UNC team, scored for the U.S. in the second half.
Other Tar Heels on the U.S. team are Carrie Lingo and Abby Martin, both rising seniors. Kate Barber, who played for Carolina from 1994-97, also is a member of the squad. UNC assistant coach Nick Conway is an assistant coach for the team.
Next up for the U.S. is a meeting with host Jamaica on Friday. The America's Cup is qualifying event for the 2002 International Hockey Federation World Cup and features seven teams from North, Central and South America, as well as the Caribbean.
Under-21 Team Falls in Germany
In other U.S. Field Hockey Association international action, the U.S. Under-21 team fell 2-1 to the Rafelberg club team in Cologne, Germany. Among the members of the 18-athlete team are UNC players Stephanie Fuller, Meredith Keller and Abbey Woolley.
