ORLANDO, FLA. - Seniors Jeff Sonke and Bobby Gormsen were named to the 2001 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Lacrosse Team announced Thursday night on the eve of the conference championship tournament being held at Walt Disney World's Wide World of Sports Complex.
The 11-man team included three players each from Maryland, Duke and Virginia and two from North Carolina. Sonke and Gormsen were both named to the team in 2000 as well.
Sonke, an attackman from Birmingam, Mich., leads the 2001 Tar Heels in goals with 23, assists with 11 and points with 34. He ranks third in the ACC in points per game, second in the ACC in goals per game and seventh in the ACC in assists per game. Sonke is in his fourth year as a starting attackman for the Tar Heels.
Gormsen is the leader of the Tar Heel defense which is allowing only 9.00 goals per game this season, down significantly from the 10.35 goals per game the Tar Heels allowed during the 2000 campaign. Gormsen started as a defensive midfielder as a junior in 2000. This is his first year as a starter at a close defense position. He is second on the Tar Heel team in ground balls with 44. He was named the ACC Player of the Week on April 9 after his play led Carolina to a 7-5 upset win at then fourth-ranked Virginia.
