UENOS AIRES -- A late goal by Russia's Olga Chentsova continued the USA Under-21 field hockey team's Junior World Cup woes, as Russia downed the U.S., 3-2, at the National Hockey Stadium in Quilmes.
Chetsova broke a 2-2 tie with her second goal of the game in the 60th minute to drop the U.S. to 0-5 at the International Hockey Federation's (FIH) premier event for junior players. The U.S. continues play on Tuesday against Spain.
The U.S. loss, combined with Spain's 5-0 win over Chile, drops the U.S. into the battle for 13th through 15th places when the classification matches for the 15-team tournament begin Thursday.
The U.S. opened the scoring early in the game when Maryland's Dina Rizzo connected on a field goal in the 10th minute. Chentsova scored the first of her two goals nine minutes later to tie the score a 1-1 at halftime.
Russia took a 2-1 lead midway through the second half on a field goal by Joulia Silvina before the USA's April Fronzoni (University of Michigan) tied the game a minute later at the 54-minute mark. Chentsova then added her gamewinner on a field goal off U.S. keeper Amy Tran (UNC).
The U.S. played short-handed late in the game when Carey Fetting-Smith and Jessica Coleman were sent off with yellow cards in the 54th and 63rd minutes.
