UNC Field Hockey Hands Out Team Awards

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--The University of North Carolina field hockey program handed out its team awards recently, honoring players who excelled during the 2000 campaign.
Kristen McCann, the 2000 ACC Player of the Year, was named the recipient of the Anderson Mark of Excellence Most Valuable Player Award. A forward from McCungie, Pa., McCann led the Tar Heels with 27 goals and 56 points during her senior season. She finished her career with 59 goals, the fifth-highest total in UNC history, and ranks seventh on the program's scoring chart with 131 points.
Jana Toepel, also a senior during the 2000 campaign, received the Carmen and Michael Hooker Leadership Award. A three-time All-America selection, Toepel is the second Tar Heel to receive the Leadership Award, which was established prior to the 2000 season.
During her career, Toepel has won all four of the UNC team honors. The back from Perkiomenville, Pa., was MVP in 1999, Unsung Hero in 1998 and Rookie of the Year in 1996.
Katy Potter, a freshman from Emmaus, Pa., earned the Ken and Cheryl Williams Rookie of the Year Award. A forward/midfielder, Potter redshirted during the 2000 season and has four years of eligibility remaining.
Susan Hayes, a rising senior who has started at back the past three season, earned Marjorie Moses Schwab Unsung Hero Award. Hayes, from Bethesda, Md., was named to the All-ACC Tournament team last season.
North Carolina finished the 2000 season as the NCAA runner-up with a record of 20-4. The Tar Heels advanced to the NCAA Championship game before falling 3-1 to Old Dominion.
