Southern Charm, the Chapel Hill-based entry in the United Airlines Field Hockey League, won its third consecutive championship Sunday with a 3-1, come-from-behind win against the Midwest Cyclones.
Playing in College Park, Md., the Charm beat the New England Eclipse 4-0 on Saturday to advance to Sunday's title game. The defending champions trailed 1-0 at halftime against the Cyclones but rallied for the win to earn their third crown in the four-year history of the summer league, which is sponsored by the U.S. Field Hockey Association.
Antoinette Lucas, a 1996 Olympian, scored the Charm's first goal, two minutes into the second half. Wake Forest coach Jen Averill, who had a hat-trick in the semifinal win, scored to give the team a 2-1 lead. Wake Forest's Maria Whitehead scored the final goal for the Southern Charm.
The team was coached by Nick Conway, associate head coach at UNC. Karen Shelton, the UNC head coach, played on the team and served as Conway's assistant after coaching the Charm to league crowns in 1999 and 2000. Tar Heels who played for the Charm in the championship game were Stephanie Fuller, Meredith Keller and Abbey Woolley. Also in the starting lineup was Leslie Lyness, the national player of the year as a senior at UNC in 1989.
