CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--Eight University of North Carolina field hockey players will represent the U.S. as members of the 2002 Under-19 or Under-23 teams, announced on Tuesday. The squads were selected at U.S. Field Hockey's A Camp Dec. 27-31 in Chula Vista, Calif.
Carey Fetting-Smith and Katy Tran were named to the Under-19 team, while Stephanie Fuller, Kelsey Keeran, Meredith Keller, Abby Martin, Katy Potter and Abbey Woolley were named to the Under-23 team.
Thirteen members of the Under-19 squad, including both Fetting-Smith and Tran, played together as members of the 2001 Under-18 team. Coached by Cheryl Murtagh, the team is scheduled to compete in the California Cup in May and the Montreal Cup in June.
Fuller, Keeran, Keller, Martin and Woolley are among 14 members of the Under-23 team who played together on the Under-21 team last year. Coached by Tess Ellis, the squad will represent the U.S. at the Pan America Hockey Federation Indoor Championship in March in Rockville, Md., playing for a berth in the FIH Indoor World Cup in 2003 in Germany.
Fetting-Smith, Keeran, Potter and Tran will be sophomores on the UNC squad next fall, while Fuller and Keller will be seniors. Martin and Woolley both finished their collegiate careers with the 2001 season.
In addition to those selected for the Under-19 and Under-23 teams, five current or former Tar Heels are representing the U.S. as part of the National Team, which will compete in the Champions Challenge Feb. 9-17 in South Africa. Carolina players on the nation's top squad are UNC graduates Kate Barber, Kristen McCann and Peggy Storrar, as well as rising seniors Carrie Lingo and Amy Tran.
