Tar Heels Explode For Four Goals In 10 Minutes, Down Florida State

TALLAHASSEE, FLA. - The second-ranked North Carolina women's soccer team had its best finishing effort of the season Wednesday night, scoring five goals on only 14 shots and defeating 25th-ranked Florida State 5-1 at the Seminole Soccer Complex. The game was the final in an 11-match road trip for the Tar Heels who will return to Chapel Hill and play a home match for the first time in 41 days Saturday at 4 p.m. against the Virginia Cavaliers. The Tar Heels are now 12-1-2 overall and 2-1 in the ACC. The Seminoles fell to 7-4-3 overall and 1-2-1 in the ACC.
Carolina led 1-0 at the half Tuesday night on a goal by sophomore midfielder Mary McDowell before an explosion of four goals in a period of 9:04 cemented the win in the second half.
UNC had a 15-6 shot edge, including a 7-2 margin in shots on goal. Florida State had nine corner kicks to four for UNC. In a relatively clean game, UNC was called for eight fouls and FSU for six.
The Tar Heels took a halftime lead at 1-0 when McDowell scored her fifth goal of the season at the 34:28 mark. Freshman defender Kendall Fletcher cross the ball from the right side into the box where McDowell flicked in a shot from close range at the far post from four yards away.
In the first 14 minutes of the second half the host Seminoles put the pressure on in an effort to gain the equalizer. They had two shots and five corner kicks in that time. But UNC bounced back to control the next several minutes. The Tar Heels broke through for a 2-0 lead at 63:31 when sophomore Anne Morrell scored her fourth goal of the season. Morrell's shot hit the post and then bounced off FSU goalkeeper Kerry York into the back of the net.
Just over three minutes later Morrell scored her fifth goal of the campaign on a shot in the box, assisted by freshman forward Lindsay Tarpley. Tarpley took a shot that hit the post and then Morrell pounced on the rebound to put the ball home. Less than one minute after Morrell's second goal, the Tar Heels scored again as junior forward Alyssa Ramsey tallied her team-leading 11th goal, assisted by Tarpley. Ramsey took Tarpley's pass, dribbled past York and scored into an empty net.
Sophomore midfielder Leigh Blomgren finished off the scoring for UNC at 72:35 with her first career goal. The Greensboro native gathered in a corner kick from junior Elizabeth Ball and rifled a shot from the top of the box far post.
Florida State averted the shutout by scoring with 1:32 to play in the match. Jessica Bell got her first goal of the season, scoring in the box off an assist by Leah Gallegos. Gallegos slipped a ball into the box and Bell went near post on the shot.
Jenni Branam started her second straight game in goal for UNC and played 15:28. Freshman Aly Winget came on and played the last 74:32 to improve her record on the season to 9-1-1. Winget had one save and one goal allowed. York started in goal for FSU and had five goals allowed and one save in 77:07. Backup goalie Joy McKenzie played 12:53 and had one save.
oth teams will be in the Triangle this weekend with FSU playing ACC leading NC State in Raleigh on Saturday at 2 p.m. and UNC hosting Virginia at 4 p.m. Saturday at Fetzer Field. The UNC game will be part of a doubleheader in Chapel Hill as the Tar Heel men meet NC State at 7 p.m. at Fetzer Field.
