Chapel Hill, N.C. - Bob Cherry, a senior on this year's University of North Carolina golf team, was recently honored by the Golf Coaches Association of America for his achievements on the golf course and in the classroom during the 2001-02 season.
Cherry, along with 16 other players, was named to the Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar team. The honors were originally presented in May; however, student-athletes that reached the required criteria during the final part of the spring semester/season remained eligible for the honor and their new information was reviewed by the committee during the offseason. To earn Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar status, student-athletes must play in at least 70 percent of their team's competitve rounds and maintain minimum grade-point and scoring averages.
Cherry was the runner-up at the 2002 NCAA East Regional leading the Tar Heels to a third-place finish. Cherry garnered a spot in the starting lineup last year and tallied five top-25 finishes. He also tied for runner-up honors at the Seminole Intercollegiate, leading Carolina to the team title.
"Bob has always worked very hard and is one of our team leaders," says Tar Heel Head Coach John Inman. "From Bob's first day on campus, his hard work in the classroom, weight room and on the golf course have highlighted his leadership skills."
