MORAGA, CALIF. - The second-ranked North Carolina women's soccer team finished the non-conference phase of its 2002 schedule Sunday afternoon by defeating the host Saint Mary's Gaels 3-0 in the final game of the Saint Mary's Fall Soccer Classic at Saint Mary's Stadium. Freshman Lori Chalupny and juniors Maggie Tomecka and Alyssa Ramsey scored for the Tar Heels and two of the goals were set up by senior striker Susan Bush.
Carolina posted its fifth straight shutout in improving to 10-0-2 on the season. The Tar Heels have not allowed a goal in 556:20 since Marquette scored on a penalty kick 3:40 into a 4-1 North Carolina victory over the Golden Eagles on September 20, 2002. Saint Mary's fell to 5-6-1 with the loss.
Since then the Tar Heel defense and goalkeeper Aly Winget have held strong in protecting the Tar Heel goal. Winget played all 90 minutes Sunday against the Gaels and the freshman from Orinda, Calif. improved her record to 8-0-1, posting her third solo shutout of the season. She improved her goals against average to 0.58 on the season.
Carolina got on the board in only the third minute of the match as Chalupny tallied the first game-winning match of her career. Bush sent a pass to the talented freshman midfielder whose shot hit the post and bounced in at the 2:13 mark. It was Chalupny's second goal of the season and Bush's eighth assist.
Less than 10 minutes later the Tar Heels boosted their lead to 2-0 as Tomecka scored her first goal of the 2002 campaign with Bush garnering her ninth assist. Bush sent a pass to Tomecka who headed home a shot into the right corner past Saint Mary's goalkeeper Ruth Montgomery. Lori Chalupny took a short corner to Bush to start the sequence on the goal.
oth teams buckled down on defense before Carolina broke through with an insurance goal at 83:08. Ramsey took a pass from freshman striker Lindsay Tarpley, got an open look and dribbled past the Gaels' reserve goalkeeper, Alyson Berger, to score into an empty net. The goal was #10 of the season for Ramsey, who had the game winner in UNC's 1-0 win over top-ranked Stanford on Friday. Tarpley earned her sixth assist of the season. Ramsey and Tarpley share UNC's scoring lead with 24 points apiece. Midfielder Mary McDowell was credited with the second assist on the tally.
Carolina outshot Saint Mary's 20-6 and had eight corner kicks to five for the Gaels.
UNC returns home Monday and will prepare to play the remainder of its regular season matches, all against Atlantic Coast Conference teams. The ACC opener comes Thursday against NC State (7-3-1, ACC 1-0-1) Thursday at 7 p.m. at SAS Stadium in Cary, N.C. It will be NC State's home game. UNC also plays at Clemson this Saturday at 7 p.m.
