Carolina Advances To NCAA Women's College Cup Second Round

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. ? The second-ranked North Carolina women's soccer team advanced to the second round of the 2002 NCAA Women's College Cup Friday night with a 6-1 victory over Radford before 1,035 fans at Fetzer Field. In the other first round game at Fetzer Field Friday night, Wake Forest beat William & Mary 2-0. UNC will play Wake Forest in the second round Sunday at 1 p.m. at Fetzer Field.
Carolina controlled the play throughout as the Tar Heels outshot Radford 42-4 and had 14 corner kicks to one for Highlanders. Radford did however become the first team to score against UNC in the Tar Heels' opening match of the NCAA Tournament since NC State did so in a 4-2 loss to the Tar Heels in 1994.
The Tar Heels opened the scoring their match with two goals in the first 16 minutes of the first half. At 10:14, freshman Lindsay Tarpley scored on a header in the box with assists from senior Susan Bush and junior Elizabeth all. It was Tarpley's 14th goal of the season, tying her for the team lead with Alyssa Ramsey.
Just 5:10 after Tarpley scored the Heels made it 2-0 on a goal by Ball, her second of the season. Ball flipped a shot over the head of Radford goalie Samantha Woods from the right side. Bush and sophomore Sara Randolph had assists. The Tar Heels ended the first half with a 21-2 shot advantage. Just 3:48 into the second half the Tar Heels scored their third goal as junior Catherine Reddick scored her fourth goal of the season as she went top corner with a shot from the top of the box.
UNC head coach Anson Dorrance then emptied his bench and played most of the rest of the game with subs on the field. At 57:12, freshman Leea Murphy scored her second goal of the season on a header in the box with junior Maggie Tomecka assisting on the goal. The Tar Heels made it 5-0 at 63:40 as sophomore Sophie Gervais scored on a one touch in the box off assists by sophomores Mary McDowell and Leigh Blomgren. It was Gervais' third goal of the year.
At 78:35 the Highlanders got on the board as Rebecca Hoffman scored her third goal of the season on a shot from 25 yards out into an empty net. UNC finished the scoring at 86:16 when junior Jane Smith scored her first goal of the year on a header off a corner kick by McDowell.
North Carolina is now 18-1-4 while Radford finished its season at 15-5-1. In the second match, Wake Forest scored one goal in each half to beat William & Mary. The first goal came at 39:19 as Melissa Murray-Hobbs scored her first goal of the season from about 20 yards out. The insurance goal came at 66:26 as Sarah Kozey scored her ninth of the season assisted by Alena Thom on a one-touch from about five yards out.
Wake Forest outshot William & Mary 11-9. Erin Regan had five saves for the Demon Deacons while Nikki Villott had four saves for the Tribe.
Wake Forest improved to 13-7-1 with the win while William & Mary saw its campaign come to an end at 13-7-1.
