CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- North Carolina field hockey players Laura Douglas, Stephanie Fuller and Meredith Keller have been named to the 2002 All-Atlantic Coast Conference team, announced Thursday evening at the ACC Championship banquet. The three will be on the field today when the Tar Heels open play in the conference tournament against Maryland at 4 p.m.
The ACC tournament, which is being hosted by Duke in Durham, N.C., began Thursday afternoon when fourth-seeded Duke eliminated fifth-seeded Virginia with a 5-2 win. After Maryland and UNC play in Friday's first semifinal game, Duke will meet top-seeded Wake Forest. The championship game is scheduled for Sunday at noon.
Douglas, a sophomore midfielder from Whangarei, New Zealand, is tied for Carolina's team lead in scoring this season with 21 points. She also is tied for the team lead in assists with seven and has started all 19 games.
Fuller, a senior back from North Potomac, Md., is fourth on the team in scoring with 12 points. A starter in every game this season, she is one of three team captains.
Keller, a senior midfielder from Greenville, Del., ranks third on the team in scoring with 17 points and is tied with Douglas for the team assists lead with seven. She has started every game since arriving at UNC as a freshman, a total of 86 heading into the ACC tournament opener against Maryland. Keller, the ACC Rookie of the Year in 1999, joins Fuller as one of the team captains.
Also named to the 14-member All-ACC field hockey team were Wake Forest's Heather Aughinbaugh, Kelly Dostal, Kelly Doton, Lucy Shaw and Maria Whitehead; Duke's Gracie Sorbello and Sarah Wright; Maryland's Colleen Barbieri, Carissa Messimer and Izzy Palmer; and Virginia's Emily White
The Tar Heels, winners of 14 ACC Championships, head into the tournament with a record of 9-10 and a No. 13 national ranking. The meeting with Maryland is their second in two weeks - UNC defeated the Terrapins 3-2 in College Park, Md., on Oct. 26.
