CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - For the second time in three days the ninth-ranked North Carolina men's lacrosse team will try to beat the nation's fifth-ranked team when Carolina hosts the Maryland Terrapins Saturday at 1 p.m. at Fetzer Field.
Admission to the game is $4 for adults, $2 for children 12-17 and free to children under 12. All UNC students, staff and faculty are admitted free with a UNC One Card.
ecause of a quirk both Duke and Maryland finished tied for fifth in this week's U.S. Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association poll so the Tar Heels have the chance to beat teams ranked fifth in back-to-back games in the same week.
Coach John Haus' second Tar Heel team took care of the first part of that task Wednesday night with a come-from-behind 9-7 win over the Duke Blue Devils at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C. It was only UNC's second win over Duke since 1996 and only the third for Carolina against an Atlantic Coast Conference team in the past six years. Carolina won at Duke in 1999, at Virginia in 2001 and at Duke in 2002.
UNC (6-0, ACC 1-0) is looking to start a season 7-0 for the first time since 1993. The Tar Heels are seeking their first win over Maryland since 1996 and their first ACC win at home since beating Virginia at Fetzer Field in 1996.
Coach Dave Cottle is in his first year as the head coach at Maryland after a long tenure at Loyola. Cottle's first Terp team is 5-1 overall and 0-1 in the ACC. Maryland's lone loss was a 9-8 double overtime setback at Duke on March 2.
The Tar Heels feature a balanced scoring attack with freshman midfielder Bryant Will leading in points with 17 and assists with nine. Junior midfielder Austin Garrison is second on the team in points with 16 on 10 goals and six assists. Freshman attackman Jed Prossner has 15 points (7g, 8a), junior attackman Steven Will 13 points (11g, 2 a) and sophmore attackman Andrew Lucas 12 points (10g, 2a).
