CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Superb scoring conditions and an intimate familiarity of the home course proved to be a mixture for success Saturday, as the University of North Carolina's men's golf team snatched first place in the afternoon round of the first day of The Intercollegiate.
Playing their very own Finley Golf Course, the Tar Heels shot a combined 15-under-par team 273 in the day's second round to jump from fourth place into first. Carolina, with a two-round total of 558, leads third-ranked Wake Forest by a single stroke heading into Sunday's final round.
UNC received a big boost from Ramon Bescansa. The junior from Santiago, Spain fired a 64 in the afternoon round, breaking the previous course record by one stroke. Bescansa shot an even-par 72 in the first round, for a third-place total of 136.
"I played pretty well in the morning, but I did not score that great," said escansa. "I got a couple of birdies at the end of that first round, though, that gave me confidence. I just kept hitting close and giving myself a chance -- and some fell in."
Carolina junior Bob Cherry and his 26th-ranked teammate Dustin Bray both shot 70 in the morning and 68 in the afternoon and are tied for fourth at 138.
randt Snedeker of Vanderbilt and No. 7 Bill Haas of Wake Forest finished the day tied for the individual lead at 134. Haas and Justin Walters of NC State each tied the old course record of 65 in the morning round, before it was reset by Bescansa.
In team standings, the University of Minnesota finds itself two strokes off the pace at 560, while fourth-place NC State is three strokes back with a 561 team total. Defending champion Duke is currently in eighth place, with a five-under team score of 571.
Overall, 28 players and nine of the 12 teams finished the day below par. "I am really happy," said Carolina head coach John Inman after looking at the leaderboard. "We did not burn it up in the morning round, but Wake Forest showed everyone that it was possible to score low. I saw a lot of smart golf from our guys today.
"We are going up against great teams not just teams from the ACC, but nationally. With a one-shot lead, it is going to be really exciting tomorrow."
The Intercollegiate is being played at the 7,057-yard, par-72 Finley Golf Course. The final round will be played Sunday.
