Men's Golf In Third Place After First Round Of ACC Championships.

NEW LONDON, NC -- With all five of its players posting sub-par rounds, Georgia Tech got away to a flying start in defense of its Atlantic Coast Conference men. s golf championship over the challenging Old North State Club layout here today.
The Yellow Jackets, ranked as the nation. s top collegiate golf team in several of the latest polls, shot an opening round team score of 271, 17 under par, and a nine-shot over Clemson. In third place is North Carolina at 283 followed in order by North Carolina State at even par 288, Wake Forest at 290, Duke and Virginia at 291, Florida State at 292 and Maryland 294.
Dustin Bray of North Carolina, a sophomore from Asheboro, grabbed a one-shot lead in the individual race by posting a six-under 66. Two Georgia Tech players, senior Kris Mikkelsen and freshman Nicholas Thompson, each fired 67. s for second place. Gregg Jones of Clemson and Matt Weibring, another Georgia Tech player, had 68s.
ray had seven birdies and a lone bogey for his sparkling round. He opened play with birdies on holes one and two and his third on the par four fifth. The bogey came on the eighth hole and he made the turn at two-under 34. He also started fast on the back side with consecutive birdies on holes 10 and 11, and closed out the round with birdies on 17 and 18.
The five Georgia Tech players had rounds of 67, 67, 68,69 and 71 on the par 72, 7,102-yard layout. Only four of the player. s scores count in the team total.
Eighteen of the players in the 45-man field posted sub-par rounds and six others had even par rounds of 72.
The 49th annual championship event continues Saturday with the second 18-hole round and finishes up on Sunday with the final 18. Play begins at 8:30 each day with the final group going off at 11:10.
