ROSWELL, GA. - The University of North Carolina men's golf team continiued with their strong performance at the NCAA East Regional and finished the event with a team total of 877 which gave the Tar Heels third place and just one stroke off the lead of Regional co-champions Clemson and Georgia Tech who finished at 876. Augusta State University finished nine strokes off the lead in fourth place at 885, while Virginia Commonwealth rounded out the top five in team competition at 888.
Due to the inclement weather hovering on the Atlanta metro area in the early morning hours of round three, all of the top teams shot over par for the round. However, the rain did not dampened the game of UNC's Bob Cherry and Dustin Bray. Cherry shot a second consectutive sub par round with a one-under-par 71 giving him sole possession of second place for the tournament at 213. Although finishing tied for 37th, Bray fired a one-under-par 71 as well for a 225 total. Both Brad Moldin and Ramon Bescansa fell off the pace a bit after shooting 77's leaving them tied for 18th and 27th, respectively. Jeremy Elliott shot a seven-over-par 77 for a 228 total.
North Carolina Head Coach, John Inman, had nothing but praise for his team. "I'm incredibly proud of the guys this week," said Inman. "We've had tough conditions here and we had some under-par scores which turned the tide for us. There have been some tournaments where we've just had one or two sub-par scores and this week we had six under par scores under very tough conditions. That carried us."
Matter of fact, UNC golfers accounted for six of the 35 sub par scores totaled throughout the Regional. Tar Heel golfers were the only team in the field of 27 who had at least one sub par performance per golfer.
D.J. Trahan of Clemson, the 2001-02 ACC Player of the Year, took top honors in individual scoring after firing his third consecutive sub par round with a one-under-par 71 for a 210 total. Finishing four strokes back in third was Tyler McKeever of Georgia Southern and Brandt Snedeker of Vanderbilt at 214. Matt Welbring of Georgia rounded out the top five in individual scoring at 216.
The 54-hole event was played at the Ansley Golf Club's Settindown Creek which features a par 72, 7,119-yard layout. The top 10 teams and top two individuals not on those 10 teams now advance on to the NCAA Championships to be played May 29-June 1 at Ohio State's Scarlet Course in Columbus.
