COLUMBUS, OHIO - North Carolina's men's golf team stands at four-under-par in a tie for fourth place midway through the first round of the NCAA Championships. Play was suspended due to heavy rains at 4:26 p.m. (EST) with just half the field in the clubhouse. The top three teams also have yet to complete their rounds. Illinois leads the field of 30 teams with a nine-under score. Georgia Tech, the nation?s top-ranked team, is second at eight-under while Washington is third at five-under. Colorado, which is tied with the Tar Heels for fourth place, has completed its round and is in the clubhouse with a four-under 280.
The morning wave of 15 teams finished on schedule despite a brief period of morning rain. However, heavy rains in the afternoon forced suspension of play at Ohio State?s Scarlet Course, a par 71, 7,222-yard layout. Donnie Wagner, NCAA liason for the men?s golf championship, said the condition of the course prompted the suspension of the first round of play.
"The bunkers are under water right now which causes a problem," Wagner said. "We're going to start tomorrow morning. The committee will discuss tonight how tomorrow will run."
Ben Portie of Colorado completed his round and is in the clubhouse with a five-under-par 66. Washington?s Brock Mackenzie is also at five-under, but has yet to complete his first round. Nicholas Thompson of Georgia Tech and Mark Warman of San Diego State are both in the clubhouse with four-under 67s and tied for third place while Oklahoma State's Hunter Mahan and Illinois' Michael O'Neal stand at three-under in a tie for fifth place midway through their rounds. A pair of Tar Heels, Dustin Bray and Ramon Bescansa, are tied with 12 others for seventh place at two-under.
None of the Tar Heels completed their rounds. Bob Cherry and Brad Moldin stand at even par while Jeremy Elliott is one shot back at one-over.
