Field Hockey Summer League Opens At UNC

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--The Chapel Hill-based Southern Charm will begin its quest for a fourth consecutive United Airlines Field Hockey League title this weekend when league play opens at Francis E. Henry Stadium. The Charm is coached by Nick Conway, associate head coach at UNC, and includes 14 current or former Tar Heel players on its roster.
The seven-team elite-level league, administered by the U.S. Field Hockey Association, includes numerous Olympians, National Team members and All-America selections. Players come from the high school, college and post-collegiate ranks.
Games begin Friday, May 31, at 5 p.m. and continue that evening until 9. Saturday's games start at 8 a.m. and last until 9 p.m. Sunday's action starts at 8 a.m. and continues until noon. All games are open to the public. There is no charge for admission.
The league's second weekend of round robin play is scheduled for June 14-16 at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Mass. The UAFHL semifinals and championship are scheduled for July 6-7 at the U.S. Field Hockey Training Center in Virginia Beach, Va.
The 2002 UAHFL includes seven teams: Metro Rush (New York, New Jersey, Delaware), Midwest Cyclones, New England Eclipse, Pennsylvania Pride, Philadelphia Fury, Southern Charm (North Carolina, Georgia) and Tidewater Tempest (Virginia, Maryland).
UNC players on the Charm roster are Amber Chambers, Jana Facchinei, Kerry Falgowski, Stephanie Fuller, Mary Havell, Meredith Keller, Alex Otto, Alison Stewart and Amy Tran. Also on the team are Carolina alums Holly Huff Bruland, Abby Martin, Abbey Woolley, Jana Withrow (now a UNC assistant) and Cindy Werley (now a Duke assistant).
The squad includes Liz Tchou, the head coach at Duke, and Jennifer Averill, the head coach at Wake Forest, in addition to current and former players from Duke, Virginia and Wake Forest. UNC head coach Karen Shelton, who coached the Southern Charm to championships in 1999 and 2000, will serve as an assistant coach.
