#9 Virginia Cavaliers Down #20 Tar Heels In Men's Swimming & Diving

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. - Ninth-ranked Virginia used its talented and deep lineup to swamp 20th-ranked North Carolina 198-102 in an Atlantic Coast Conference swimming and diving dual meet Saturday at the Aquatics and Fitness Center.
The win kept the Cavaliers undefeated in the ACC this season. The #9 Cavaliers are now 5-1 overall on the season and 3-0 in the ACC. The #20 Tar Heels fell to 6-4 overall on the campaign and 2-2 in the ACC. All four Tar Heel losses have been to Top 25 teams--#12 Georgia, #7 Minnesota, 9 Virginia and #21 Florida State.
Virginia, which has won four straight Atlantic Coast Conference titles, won 13 of the 16 events in the meet. Senior Sean Quinn took two victories for the Tar Heels as he swept the breaststroke events at 100 and 200 yards. Virginia had four double winners in individual events--Fran Crippen (1000 free, 500 free), Michael Rabb (100 fly, 200 fly), Luke Anderson (50 free, 100 free) and Pete Amstutz (both diving events.)
Carolina finished second in the 200-yard medley relay as the team of sophomore Jimmy Owens, senior Sean Quinn, sophomore Eddy Matkovich and senior Michael Chenier touched in 1:32.45. Two other Tar Heel relays took fourth and fifth. Jon Van Assen, Casey Coble, Chad Ames and Justin Donato finished in 1:34.99 and Hal Wansley, Sinsia Haberle, Josh Glasco and Dan Vick finished in 1:36.05.
UNC finished 3-4-5-7 in the 1000-yard freestyle. Sophomore Reid Owen finished third at 9:22.71 followed by senior Judd Glasco in fourth at 9:25.16 and senior Steve Mohr in fifth at 9:30.82. Despite finishing seventh, freshman Patrick Woodruff had his career best time of 9:37.52.
Carolina swimmers took 2-3-4-7 in the 200-yard freestyle. Junior Michael Pigassou was second in 1:40.88, junior Yuri Suguiyama third in 1:40.91, freshman Jon Albrecht fourth in 1:41.03 and junior Justin Donato seventh in 1:44.35.
UNC got its first victory of the meet in the fourth event as sophomore Eddy Matkovich took top honors in the 100-yard backstroke at 50.27 seconds. Sophomore John Hartmann finished fourth in a season best time of 52.04, sophomore Jimmy Owens was fifth in 52.66 and freshman Jon Van Assen seventh in 53.61.
Senior Sean Quinn followed with another win for UNC as he touched first in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 56.15. Freshman Chad Ames was fourth in 59.66 and junior Sinisa Haberle sixth in a season best 59.73.
Virginia rallied with wins in the next two events--the 200-yard butterfly and 50-yard freestyle. Freshman Josh Glasco was second in the 200 fly at 1:49.38 while junior Casey Coble was sixth in 1:52.27 and sophomore Eric Mohr seventh in 1:54.34. Senior Michael Chenier was Carolina's top finisher in the 50 free with a third place finish at 21.16. Michael Piggasou was seventh in 21.53, junior Dan Vick sixth in 21.90 and senior P.J. Wallin eighth in 22.37.
Tar Heel divers finished 2-3-5-7 in one-meter diving. Junior Eric Poitras finished second with his season best score of 313.05 points while senior Stephen Krebs also had a season best score of 299.55 points as he took third place. Senior Rob McMillen was fifth with 264.23 points and freshman Ryan Matuszak seventh with 216.90 points.
After that, Virginia took control of the meet by taking 1-2-3 in the next two events, the 100-yard freestyle and the 200-yard backstroke. Top finisher for UNC in the 100 free was freshman Jon Albrecht who took second in 46.75. Pigassou was sixth in 47.74, Vick seventh in 47.76 and Donato eighth in 47.97. Sophomore John Hartmann had a season best time of 1:51.57 in the 200 back and finished fourth. Sophomore Jimmy Owens was fifth in 1:55.47 and senior Hal Wansley sixth in 1:58.25.
UNC picked up its third win of the meet as Quinn won the 200 breaststroke in a time of 1:59.96. Freshman Patrick Woodruff clocked his second career best time of the meet as he finished fourth in 2:07.64. Haberle was seventh in 2:09.97.
Yuri Suguiyama led UNC finishers in the 500-yard freestyle as he was third in 4:31.84. Reid Owen was sixth in 4:35.46 and Judd Glasco seventh in 4:36.85.
Matkovich had his second outstanding swim of the day for Carolina in the 100 fly as he finished second in 49.61. Josh Glasco was sixth in 51.29, Chad Ames seventh in 51.39 and Jon Van Assen eighth in 53.91. Tar Heel divers took 2-4-5-6 in the three-meter event. Eric Poitras was second with 305.10, Stephen Krebs fourth with 284.48, Rob McMillen fifth with 247.95 and Ryan Matuszak sixth with 238.35. Carolina was 3-4-5-7 in the 400 IM. Top finisher for UNC was Quinn in third with 4:00.86 time. Casey Coble took fourth with a time of 4:01.48, Steve Mohr fifth with 4:02.64 and Eric Mohr seventh in 4:06.86.
In the 400 free relay, UNC's top relay of Albrecht, Pigassou, Donato and Matkovich took second in 3:05.30. The fourth place relay of Suguiyama, Chenier, Owens and Vick clocked a 3:07.96 and Ames, Van Assen, Wallin and Owen fifth in 3:12.47.
UNC will continue dual meet action next Saturday when it hosts a double dual meet against Georgia Tech and Maryland beginning at 11 a.m. at Koury Natatorium.
