Carolina Golfers Win Duke Golf Classic

Durham, N.C. ? The University of North Carolina men's golf team captured the team championship of the Duke Golf Classic while senior Dustin Bray, a senior from Asheboro, N.C., brought home the individual title, the seventh win of his collegiate career. Carolina fired rounds of 292-284-292 for a four-over-par 868 total and finished one stroke ahead of Illinois which carded an 869.
ray fired a nine-under 207 total after rounds of 71-65-71 to finish five strokes ahead of Justin Bertsch of Toledo who posted a 212 total. It marks the second win of the fall campaign for both the team and Bray. Carolina also won the Franklin Street Partners Invitational while Bray tied for individual medalist honors.
Duke place third in the field of 15 teams with an 871 total while Tulsa placed fourth at 880 and Kansas State finished fifth at 882. Patrick Nagle of Illinois finished third in the individual race at 213 while Michigan State's Matt Harmon and Duke's Nathan Smith tied for fourth place at even par 216.
Tar Heel freshman Martin Ureta, from Santiago, Chile, tied for 11th place at three-over 219 while sophomore Ted Smith, from Westlake, Ohio, tied for 27th at 224; sophomore Kevin Silva, from New Bedford, Mass., tied for 30th at 225; and freshman, Will Dottley, from Madison, Miss., tied for 45th at 228. Two Tar Heels competed as individuals as junior Doug Kingston, from Bethlehem, Pa., tied for 39th place with a 227 total and junior Matt Crenshaw, from Burlington, N.C., tied for 64th at 235.
The 54-hole event was played at the Duke Golf Club which features a par 72, 7,111-yard layout. This marks the final tournament of Carolina's fall campaign. The Tar Heels open their spring season next Feb. 9-10 at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
