GREENSBORO, N.C. - North Carolina junior Laura Douglas earned ACC Field Hockey Player of the Week honors on Monday following a weekend in which she totaled five points in the Tar Heels' two wins.
The midfielder from Whangarei, New Zealand, scored twice in Saturday's 4-2 win at No. 12 Old Dominion. Douglas's first goal put UNC up 1-0 and her second was the gamewinner, giving Carolina a 3-2 lead. In Sunday's 1-0 win at No. 14 William & Mary, Douglas assisted on the game's only goal.
In addition to the ACC honor, Douglas was named Division I National Player of the Week by the website Womensfieldhockey.com.
Douglas ranks second in scoring for the No. 4 Tar Heels, 16-4 overall. She has 10 goals and a team-high 19 assists, a total that is tied for the ninth-best single-season mark in school history. Barbara Hansen had 19 in 23 games in 1994.
Douglas is the second Tar Heel player to earn ACC Player of the Week honors this season. Junior forward Kelsey Keeran has earned the honor twice.
UNC opens ACC Tournament play on Friday in Charlottesville, Va. The Tar Heels are the No. 2 seed and will face third-seeded Duke at 4 p.m. in a semifinal game.
