The North Carolina field hockey team will open Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament play Friday at 4 p.m. with a game against Duke at University Hall Turf Field in Charlottesville, Va. The Tar Heels, 16-4 overall and ranked No. 4 in the nation, are seeded No. 2 in the field. The Blue Devils, 16-2 overall and ranked second in the nation, are the No. 3 seed.
The 20th annual conference field hockey championship begins on Thursday with a 4 p.m. matchup between fourth-seeded Maryland and fifth-seeded Virginia. The winner of that game advances to face top-seeded Wake Forest on Friday at 7 p.m. The championship game is scheduled for Sunday at noon and will air live on Comcast SportsNet, Fox Sports Net South and the Sunshine Network.
Wake Forest, ranked No. 1 in the nation, won the conference outright with a 4-0 mark in league play. Duke, Maryland and UNC all finished 2-2 in ACC play. The first tiebreaker, head-to-head conference game results, failed to decide the seedings, so the conference went to the second tiebreaker, goal differential in conference games. UNC emerged as the No. 2 seed, Duke as the No. 3 and Maryland as the No. 4. Virginia finished ACC play 0-4 to earn the No. 5 seed.
The tournament field includes the top four teams in the nation. Wake Forest is No. 1, Duke No. 2, Maryland No. 3 and UNC No. 4. Virginia has been ranked for much of the season and currently is among the teams receiving votes.
Duke and UNC split their season matchups, with each team winning on its home field. The Tar Heels won 4-1 on Oct. 3 and the Blue Devils won 5-0 on Oct. 18.
