Sophomore wrestler Chris Rodrigues is the Carolina Waterscapes Student-Athlete of the Week after upsetting a pair of nationally ranked competitors and leading the Tar Heels to two wins in three matches.
Wrestling
Chris Rodrigues
Soph., 125 pounds, Marietta, Ga.
No. 18 Chris Rodrigues led the Tar Heels to a 2-1 record. Rodrigues began the week with an overtime tiebreaker win against NC State's No. 19 George Cintron, 1-1, in Chapel Hill. Rodrigues lost the toss for the third straight time, but was able to hold onto Cintron for the full 30 seconds. In his second match of the week against the seventh ranked Spartans, Rodrigues upset No. 6 Nick Simmons as he pinned him in just 1:09. In the final match of the week, the Marietta, Ga., native defeated Eastern Michigan's William Green in just 21 seconds with a pinfall. Rodrigues now has 13 pins on the season which is sixth best in school history. He finished the week 3-0 and has an overall record of 24-10 this season.
Softball
Crystal Cox
Fr., Pitcher, Harrisburg, N.C.
Righthanded pitcher Crystal Cox picked up her first collegiate victory of her career in brilliant fashion. Cox threw a no-hitter against East Carolina, walking two and striking out 13 to improve to 1-1 on the season. Cox picked up her second win of the week against Rutgers, surrendering two runs on two hits, while striking out seven. The Harrisburg, N.C., native struck out 20 in the week and improved to 2-1 on the season.
Softball
Jaclyn Holden
Freshman, First Baseman, Santa Clarita, Calif.
Firstbaseman Jaclyn Holden exploded offensively last week for the Tar Heels. Holden had the game-winning RBIs against East Carolina, Rutgers and Dayton. Against ECU, Holden slugged two doubles and three RBI in the game opener. At the Triangle Classic, the freshman slammed a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning to give Carolina a 2-1 lead which they would never relinquish. She finished the game a perfect 3-for-3, with a home run, a double and two RBI. The Santa Clarita, Calif., native didn?t stop there slugging her second home run of the day with a solo shot to tie the second game against Dayton at 1-1 in the second inning. Then she came up to bat in the sixth inning with UNC trailing by two with two runners on, and sent a pitch to the gap in left field for a double and two RBI, to give UNC its second straight win. Holden ended the week hitting .636, with two home runs, four doubles, eight RBI and a 1.545 slugging percentage.
Women's Basketball
Coretta Brown
Sr., Guard, Statesboro, Ga.
In UNC's two games last week, both ACC wins, Brown led the Tar Heels with 20.5 points per game while shooting 54.2 percent from the field. She was even more accurate from three-point range, hitting 61.5 percent (8-13) of her shots. Brown also averaged 4.5 assists and 2.5 rebounds in playing 38.5 minutes per game. For the season, she leads UNC (23-2, 12-1 ACC) in scoring (14.3 points per game) and assists (4.7)
Men's Basketball
Raymond Felton had 21 points, five assists and two steals in the win over Virginia and scored 19 points with seven assist and just one turnover at Clemson. He forced Virginia point guards into 10 turnovers. He was 8 for 19 from three-point range in the two games.
