CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina (2-0) defeated Seton Hall (0-1) 18-2 Friday afternoon in the weekend series opener at Boshamer Stadium. Weather delayed the start of the game fifteen minutes but could not slow down the Tar Heels' bats or starting pitcher Daniel Moore.
Moore (1-0) picked up his first victory of the season by pitching five innings and giving up just one run on six hits while striking out six Pirate batters. Carolina batters combined for 18 hits and 18 runs including five runs batted in by third baseman Sammy Hewitt.
The Tar Heels got on the board first by scoring two runs in the second inning. Hewitt reached on a fielder's choice then advanced on singles by Mike Daniel and Greg Mangum. Hewitt plated the first run of the day on a wild pitch and Daniel came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Chad Prosser.
Carolina added to its lead with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Chase Younts singled to lead off the inning and Sammy Hewitt followed with a home run to right field, his first as a Tar Heel.
Seton Hall scratched across a run in the top of the fifth inning as Matt Cuttruff came around and scored the Pirates' first run on an infield single by Josh Schuck. But Moore rebounded to get Lou Santangelo on a deep fly out to left to end the threat.
The Tar Heels extended their lead to 7-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning. Sean Farrell and Chris Iannetta both singled and then a walk to Jeremy Cleveland chased Seton Hall starter Elvys Quezada from the game. With one out, Younts collected his third hit of the day, a bunt single which scored Farrell. Iannetta and Cleveland then scored on Hewitt's single to center, giving him four RBIs on the day.
Hewitt continued his great day at the plate with another RBI single in the bottom of the seventh which scored Cleveland for the second time on the day. A pinch hit single by Adam Weaver then put the Tar Heels up by nine runs.
Carolina's bullpen held Seton Hall's offense to just one run over the final four innings as the Tar Heels offense continued to roll with 11 runs in their last two at bats, including a grand slam by pinch hitter Wes Moyer, his first career home run.
Carolina and Seton Hall continue their series Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Boshamer Stadium. The series finale will be played Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
