CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina defeated Seton Hall 7-6 in game two of Sunday's doubleheader at Boshamer Stadium to complete the three game sweep. The second game of the doubleheader was shortened to seven innings and the Tar Heels needed each at bat to pick up the win. .
Carolina led 3-1 after six innings but the bullpen was unable to shut the door on the Pirates who scored five runs in the top of the seventh. Trailing 6-3 going into the bottom of the last inning, UNC put together a four run rally which was capped off by a two-run, game winning single by senior Sean Farrell.
Seton Hall grabbed the lead for the first time in the series when catcher Lou Santangelo singled home Mike Bascom in the top of the first inning.
Carolina went ahead with two runs of its own in the bottom of the second. With one out, Sammy Hewitt walked and later came around to score on an error by Pirate shortstop Santiago Chi. Then with two outs, Justin Webb stole second base and Chase Younts raced home from third base on the throw, giving the Tar Heels the lead.
A solo home run by freshman Mike Daniel, the first of his career, put the Tar Heels up 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Pirates then struck for five runs in the top of the seventh. Three doubles in the inning by Santangelo, Brandon Cohen and Matt Cuttruff in addition to a walk and hit batter allowed Seton Hall to go ahead but only momentarily.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Tar Heels loaded the bases with no outs thanks to two walks and a hit batter. Seton Hall starter Tim Sabo was then lifted from the game in favor of reliever Mark Irwin. Pinch hitter Wes Moyer then singled sharply to left, driving in Blair Waggett and Justin Webb. Chad Prosser then reached on a bunt and with no outs still and the bases loaded, Sean Farrell's single to left scored Ross Cook and Moyer to end the game and complete the sweep.
Carolina Head Coach Mike Fox knows the season is long but was pleased with his team's effort today. "It was a good weekend for us, it showed me a little bit about the character of our team," said Fox.
Carolina resumes play Tuesday at Boshamer Stadium with a game against Appalachian State at 3 p.m. The Tar Heels will then host the University of Richmond on Wednesday also at 3 p.m.
