CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-Seven North Carolina field hockey players have been named to the 2002 Division I National Academic Squad, as announced by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA). To earn a spot on the team, players must carry an overall GPA of 3.30 or better.
Tar Heels named to the squad were Kerry Falgowski, Carey Fetting-Smith, Mary Havell, Kelsey Keeran, Alex Otto, Alison Stewart and Katy Tran. Falgowski, Fetting-Smith, Havell, Keeran and Tran were sophomores on the 2002 team, Stewart a junior and Otto a redshirt freshman.
"I'm proud of all our players who have earned this honor," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "Maintaining a high grade point average while competing in a varsity sport at the highest level is an amazing accomplishment, one that requires a lot of hard work, discipline and vision."
Falgowski, a biology major, led the team in scoring last season with 23 points on a team-high 11 goals and one assist. Fetting-Smith, who is working toward a double major in English and drama, started all 16 games in which she played and finished with three assists. Havell, who is working toward a double major in journalism and political science, played in 11 games and started six. Keeran, who is enrolled in the General College, started all 16 games in which she played and finished with four goals and 11 points. Otto, a biology major, played in 11 games and started 10. Stewart, an exercise and sports science major, started all 20 games and finished the season with two goals and nine points. Tran, a biology major, did not see action and will count 2002 as a redshirt year.
Fetting-Smith, Keeran and Stewart made the NFHCA team for the second year.
