Carolina Golfers Tied For 12th Place At NCAA Championship

STILLWATER, OKLA. - North Carolina's men's golf team fired a third-round 299, its low round thus far, for a 915 total and is tied for 12th place with Washington at the NCAA Championship. Top-ranked Clemson grabbed the lead after firing a one-under-par 287, the only sub-par team score in the tournament so far. The Tigers have an 888 total, one shot ahead of host Oklahoma State which has an 889 total after posting a two-over 290 in the third round. UCLA and Florida are tied for third place with 899 totals while Wake Forest is fifth at 900 and Auburn is sixth at 903. After today's third round the field is being cut to the top 18 teams and top six individuals not on those teams for the fourth and final round.
Lee Williams of Auburn fired a one-under 71 for a four-under 212 total to maintain the individual lead. A trio of players - Oklahoma State's Hunter Mahan, Kentucky's John Holmes and Lamar's Chris Stroud - is five strokes back in second place with 217 totals. Alejandro Canizares of Arizona State and Matthew Rosenfeld of Texas both posted one-under 71s and are tied for fifth place with 218 totals.
Senior Ramon Bescansa fired a one-under 71 in the third round, the low round thus far for the Tar Heels, for a 232 total and is tied for 72nd place with teammate Kevin Silva who carded a 78. Richard Treis is still low for Carolina in a tie for 47th place with a 229 total even though he struggled with an 80 in the third round. Jeremy Elliott posted a 74 for a 234 total and is tied for 85th place while Dustin Bray tallied a 76 for a 237 total and is tied for 103rd place.
The final round of the 72-hole event will be played Friday at Karsten Creek which features a par 72, 7,095-yard layout.
