Three former Tar Heels scored goals Sunday as the U.S. Field Hockey National Team advanced to the Pan American Games gold medal match with a 6-1 win over Chile in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The U.S. team will face Argentina on Wednesday for the title and an automatic berth in field for the 2004 Olympics.
Abbey Woolley, who played at UNC from 1998-2001, came off the bench to score twice and Kate Barber and Kristen McCann added a goal each. Another former Tar Heel, Peggy Storrar, is the team's starting goalkeeper and has not given up a goal in the tournament. Also in the starting lineup Sunday was Carrie Lingo, and Amy Tran came off the bench to replace Storrar in goal.
The U.S. team was up 1-0 at halftime before Woolley got the scoring started in the second half. After her goal in the 43rd minute, Kelli Gannon added one in the 56th minute. McCann, Woolley and Barber then scored goals over an eight-minute span to put the U.S. up 6-0 before a late goal by Chile.
In the tournament, the U.S. has outscored opponents 18-1 in winning all four of its games. Argentina, which also has reached the title game undefeated, has outscored opponents 54-1, including a 25-0 win over the Dominican Republic.
