All-Star Quartet Highlights Strong Summer for UNC Baseball

CHAPEL HILL - Juniors Garry Bakker, Marshall Hubbard and Chris Iannetta, as well as sophomore Adam Kalkhof, each participated in the all-star games of their respective summer leagues to highlight an outstanding offseason for the University of North Carolina baseball team. In all, 16 Tar Heels participated in league play this summer.
akker, who pitched for the Cotuit Kettleers of the Cape Cod League, completed the season with a 2-0 record an a 1.76 earned run average in nine appearances. He allowed just 10 earned runs on 36 hits in 51 innings pitched. The Sloatsburg, N.Y., native also struck out a team-best 48 batters. Bakker was named No. 2 Major League Baseball prospect in the Cape Cod League All-Star Game by TeamOneBaseball.com. Senior Kevin Brower also pitched for Cotuit.
Named a 2003 Freshman All-America by Collegiate Baseball, Kalkhof was nearly unhittable as a member of the New England Collegiate Baseball League's North Adams Steeplecats. He led the league with a 0.65 ERA and ranked second with 69 strikeouts in 55.1 innings pitched. Additionally, he allowed just 34 hits and four earned runs, while limiting the opposition to a .175 batting average.
Iannetta also earned a spot in the NECB all-star game after batting .302 (38-126) with six doubles and 20 runs batted in for the Newport Gulls. Joining Kalkhof and Iannetta in the NECB was sophomore Matt Danford, who went 3-0 with a 1.99 ERA for the Keene Swamp Bats. He made five starts and allowed seven earned runs in 31.2 innings pitched. Danford also fanned 31 batters.
Hubbard took home all-star honors in the Coastal Plain League after posting team-bests of a .337 average, seven home runs and 37 RBI for the Outer Banks Daredevils. Hubbard was an instrumental part of the Daredevils run to the 2003 Coastal Plain League Petitt Cup title.
Ten other Tar Heels joined Hubbard in the CPL. Sophomores Jonathan Hovis and Mark Griffin, as well as junior Greg Mangum played for the Gastonia Grizzlies, while junior Bo Dickerson, junior Bryan Phillips and sophomore Adam Weaver were a part of the Fayetteville Swampdogs. Senior Scott Senatore, sophomore Blair Waggett and junior Justin Webb all played for the Wilmington Sharks. Junior Ross Cook pitched for the Durham Americans.
Leading the way was Senatore, who owned a 0.52 ERA in 34.1 innings with Wilmington. He also posted a 2-2 record and fanned 31 batters. Mangum hit .279 in 34 starts with six RBI and 14 steals in 16 attempts for Gastonia, while Griffin tallied three hits, a double and one run scored in 10 games. Despite a solid 3.45 ERA, Hovis posted a 1-5 record on the mound. He struck out 35 batters in 28.2 innings. In Fayetteville, Dickerson went 0-1 with a 3.63 ERA in 10 appearances, and Phillips was 1-3 with a 2.96 ERA in 11 appearances. Both Dickerson and Phillips both averaged around one strikeout per inning.
The Tar Heels, who went 42-23 in 2003, are coming off their first NCAA Regional victory since 1989. After winning the Starkville Regional with a win against Missouri and a pair of victories over host Mississippi State, Carolina came within two wins of a trip to the College World Series.
