The U.S. Field Hockey National Team, which includes six former North Carolina players, fell 3-1 to Argentina Wednesday in the gold medal game of the Pam American Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Argentina has won the field hockey gold all five times it has been contested at the Pan Am Games. The U.S. finished with a silver for the fourth time.
In the bronze medal game, Uruguay beat Chile 5-4 on penalty strokes.
Argentina had 29 shots in the game and U.S. goalkeeper Peggy Storrar, a former Tar Heel, came up with 13 saves. "Against Argentina you get to see a lot of balls," Storrar said after the game. "It's fun, but it wasn't that much fun tonight."
Argentina led 3-0 before Tracey Fuchs scored the only U.S. goal, in the 64th minute of play.
The win give Argentina an automatic berth in the 2004 Olympic field. The U.S. will get another chance to qualify for the Games when it plays in the Olympic Qualifier in Auckland, New Zealand, next March.
In addition to Storrar, former Tar Heels in the starting U.S. lineup were Kate Barber, Carrie Lingo and Kristen McCann. Abbey Woolley saw action as a reserve and Amy Tran was on the roster as a backup goalkeeper.
