The U.S. team, which includes six former North Carolina players, has opened Pam American Games play 2-0 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The perfect start assures the U.S. at least a second place finish in Pool B and a spot in the Pam Am semifinals. The U.S. plays its final pool game on Thursday against Canada.
After opening play on Sunday with a 5-0 win over Jamaica, the U.S. team topped Uruguay Tuesday, also by a 5-0 score.
Kate Barber, who played for UNC from 1994-97 and earned All-America honors three times, scored a goal in each of the games. Other Tar Heels joining her in the starting lineups were Carrie Lingo, Kristen McCann and goalkeeper Peggy Storrar. Abbey Woolley came off the bench to play in both games. Also on the team is reserve goalkeeper Amy Tran.
Barber reached a milestone against Jamaica, playing in her 100th international contest. McCann played in her 50th against Uruguay.
Following pool play, crossover play begins on Aug. 10. The championship and bronze medal games are set for Aug. 13.
