No. 1 Tar Heels Outlast No. 5 Aggies In Overtime

HOUSTON, TEXAS - For the second straight match, North Carolina needed overtime to notch a victory in the Houston College Challenge but freshman Elizabeth Guess' goal in the 92nd minute lifted the No. 1 Tar Heels to a 1-0 overtime win over No. 5 Texas A&M Sunday afternoon in women's soccer action at Meyer Park. UNC improved to 6-0 with the win while A&M lost for the first time and is 4-1. Carolina is 3-0 in overtime this season with wins over Washington, Texas and the Aggies.
oth goalies were stellar in the win before a crowd of 1,500 fans. UNC's Aly Winget ran her scoreless minutes streak to 452 minutes and 23 seconds and made three saves on the afternoon. The sophomore has five solo shutouts this year and has allowed on one goal. Kati Jo Spisak tallied seven saves on Sunday afternoon but it was not enough for the Aggies, ranked No. 5 by the NSCAA and Soccer Buzz, No. 6 by Soccer Times and No. 16 by Soccer America.
With the game tied at the end of regulation, the Aggies and Tar Heels entered the first overtime period having played evenly in the first 90 minutes.
Guess scored on a header off a cross from Alyssa Ramsey 1:55 into the first overtime period to earn the golden-goal victory for UNC. It was the second goal of Guess' career and first game-winning goal. Spisak, the Aggies' sophomore goalkeeper, thwarted seven North Carolina shots in the two regulation periods to send the match to overtime. A&M forced Carolina goalkeeper Aly Winget to make three saves to preserve the win.
The Aggie side was not void of chances. For the match, North Carolina had a slight 15-12 advantage in shots and corner kicks were even at seven apiece.
Carolina returns home to play Guilford Wednesday at 7 p.m. and UCLA Friday at 5 p.m. The latter game is played as part of the Duke adidas Classic in Durahm.
Texas A&M returns to action on Friday, September 19, at the SMU Mi Cocina Soccer Cup on the campus of SMU. Kickoff is set for noon against Oregon.
